The southern Appalachian Mountains are known for their epic fall color, a phenomenon that draws thousands of people to the area. Some of the most incredible fall colors happen in our mountains, rivaled only by the states in the Northeast. Because our region has warmer overall temperatures and high elevations, our season can last longer than other parts of the country. For residents and visitors alike, where are some of the best places to see our changing leaves? Here are our five favorite spots for leaf peeping.
Grandfather Mountain
Early in the season, you’ll see the best fall colors at one of our area’s highest elevations. Grandfather mountain, just 2 hours from Asheville, is a breathtaking site with a huge area near the top of the one of the highest peaks. While you’re there, check out the Mile-High Swinging Bridge for adventure and more epic views.
Mount Pisgah
If you want to stay a little closer to home and are looking for a challenging hike, consider a climb up Mount Pisgah. The steep hike takes you on rock steps to one of the most recognizable peaks around Asheville. At the top you’ll find the tower for Asheville’s local TV station, WLOS. On a clear day, you can see all the way into Asheville and take in the fall colors of the region.
Banner Elk
If a fall trip to small–town America is your idea of an amazing way to spend an afternoon, consider Banner Elk. Wrap yourself in a sweater, sip on tea or coffee, and enjoy the colors from downtown. Banner Elk is only an hour and a half from Asheville, but you’ll feel like you’re in a completely different part of the world. Their fall colors peak around mid-October.
The NC Arboretum
If you can wait until closer to Halloween, take the kids to the North Carolina Arboretum. Enjoy their constructed and cultivated trails that display native plants and trees as they begin to change their colors. You can buy just a day pass or you can get an annual membership so you can enjoy this spot in every season.
Hickory Nut Gap
As the colors fade in the rest of the country, Hickory Nut Gap area is just about to light on fire with its fall foliage. Around Lake Lure you can see the grand finale of colors in the area’s lowlands. Drive through the gorge for a leisurely view or rent a boat to laze on the lake while the days are still warm. Be sure to check out the plenty of great spots available for food and drinks in the area.
