Throughout the past tumultuous years in real estate, the team at GoPrime of West Asheville has been working within the community to find new ways to help area residents reach their dream of homeownership. One agency that we value in our community is the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency. As stated on the NCHFA website:
The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency is a self-supporting public agency that finances affordable housing opportunities for North Carolinians whose needs are not met by the market. Since its creation in 1973 by the General Assembly, the Agency has financed more than 318,830 affordable homes and apartments, totaling $30.1 billion.
The Agency provides financing through the sale of tax-exempt bonds and management of federal tax credit programs, the federal HOME Program, the state and national Housing Trust Funds, and other programs.
We wanted to take an opportunity to share a little about our experience with the NCHFA and how this organization can help buyers in the Asheville area.
Buying a Home
NCHFA has a variety of loan programs that can help first-time buyers. The NCHFA’s down payment assistance program offers up to 5% of the loan amount for those buying for the first time or moving up. The NC 1st Home Advantage Down Payment also provides up to $8000 for qualifying first-time homebuyers. As an additional incentive, first time homebuyers and veterans may qualify for the NC Home Advantage Tax Credit, which can save on income tax amounts each year.
Check out the NCHFA homeownership guide for more details.

Resources for Home Buyers
To learn more about the NCHFA, subscribe to their newsletter or visit their site for additional resources. There are available infographics to illustrate the process, the Pocket Guide to Home Ownership in both English and Spanish, and even a Pocket Guide to Home Ownership Game so you can have fun as you learn about your options as a homebuyer in North Carolina.
Working with a Housing Counselor
When buying a home, you know you need a lender and a real estate agent, but there is one more member who can provide a complete team to help you. A housing counselor can help you navigate the home buying process, which can be especially helpful to someone who has never done it before. They can review your finances and help determine if you’re ready to buy a home and, if not, can help you improve your credit to meet the loan requirements and create a budget to stay on track.
