Cross the Mile High Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain
For adventurers who aren’t afraid of heights, the mile-high swinging bridge at Grandfather Mountain is a must-see local spot. Access to the bridge is included in your Grandfather Mountain admission, and there are plenty of other things to do in the adventure park, including hikes.
Celebrate Christmas at Biltmore
While the event won’t be for a while, put the Biltmore house on your Christmas list. America’s largest house is right in our back yard, and they do it up big for the holidays every year. The Biltmore is a must-do if you love the glitz and glam of the holiday season.
See a Show at the Orange Peel
The Orange Peel is one of the premier concert venues in the southeast. Between 1950 and 1962, it was the area’s skating rink. It then became a series of R&B and Soul clubs, the most famous being the Orange Peel. The venue was empty for many years until downtown was revitalized in the 1980s. Today it’s known as one of the top rock clubs by magazines like Rolling Stone and GQ. It’s worth checking out a show.
Hike a Part of the Appalachian Trail
Did you know that the 2190-mile Appalachian Trail cuts through our corner of Western North Carolina? You don’t have to hike the whole thing from Georgia to Maine to feel a sense of satisfaction. The Appalachian Trail cuts across Max Patch and through the town of Hot Springs, so pick a starting point and hike for a while.
Visit the Basilica of Saint Lawrence
No matter your religious beliefs, a visit to the Basilica of Saint Lawrence in downtown Asheville is worth it. Think of it as seeing the most famous churches in Italy, like the Duomo in Florence, right in our back yard. It’s the largest freestanding elliptical dome in the country and one of less than 100 officially declared basilicas in the U.S. The basilica offers self-guided tours any time it’s open to the public.
