Today is National Senior Citizens Day, not just a day for seniors but also for those of us who have a beloved senior in our lives. This day was proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 with the purpose of letting your senior family members and friends know how much you care about them and appreciate their accomplishments.
We have always been taught to respect our elders, and in today’s housing market older adults part of that includes helping to educate what resources are available to them. In 2020, about 16.9% of the American population was over the age of 65, which is expected to reach 22% by 2050. While adults might be working longer, it’s essential to consider what to expect after retirement, and plan for the future. Here are some resources for our older adult neighbors in Asheville.
Aging in Place
Aging in place is the idea that older adults can stay in their own homes with access to necessary services and accommodations rather than moving into assisted living or nursing homes. To age in place comfortably, it’s essential to plan ahead for what services you may need and see which are available to ensure that your home is accessible and safe.
Buying a Physically Accessible Home
Many homes in the downtown neighborhoods of Asheville were built as far back as the 1910s. These homes may have steep staircases and inaccessible bathrooms. Renovating these homes can pose a challenge due to the older infrastructure and the associated cost. It may be smart to start planning for another living situation before it becomes necessary will be a big part of the aging in place process. Consider homes that are one-level, have ample knee-space under sinks and countertops for those in wheelchairs, have low and reachable storage spaces, or a side-by-side refrigerator making it easier to reach what you need.
Resources to Age at Home Safely and Comfortably
Asheville and many of the surrounding areas have support readily available for older adults who need additional help and care as they age. In-home healthcare providers can make many aspects of living at home easier. Services like Project C.A.R.E. (Caregiver Alternatives to Running on Empty) can assist caregivers assisting loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. Local services like meal and grocery delivery can make stocking your pantry and fridge easier. Check out the Meals on Wheels of Asheville Buncombe County, an organization that has delivered meals to homebound seniors in the community every weekday for over 45 years. Additionally, The Senior Opportunity Center in Asheville offers a variety of programs for senior citizens such as games, exercise, crafts, billiards, massages, pottery, quilting, and more! We recommend talking to local financial professionals to ensure that you have the budget for aging in place.
