Make the Most of Leap Day
It only happens once every four years. This year, 2020, we’re experiencing Leap Day. February will have 29 days this year rather than the typical 28. To make it even sweeter, this year’s Leap Day falls on a Saturday. So, in essence, you have a completely extra Saturday on the calendar this year. Yeah, we know, not really. Because if it weren’t Leap Year, that Saturday would simply be March 1st. But indulge us for the moment and imagine: what will you do with an extra Saturday this month?
Open Doors Asheville Art Fair
Open Doors of Asheville is an amazing organization dedicated to ending childhood poverty through education. This year, on Leap Day, they will be hosting an art fair and all proceeds will help underserved children and their families.
The event is titled Look 2020: Sight Unseen and will feature local artists. Check out the event page and stay tuned for more details.
Pysanky Workshop in RAD
You’ve seen them before. Beautifully decorated eggs using bold colors and folk-art patterns are a Ukrainian artform called Pysanky. In this special Leap Day workshop, you can learn the art of pysanky through wax-resist dyeing. You’ll become familiar with different types of folk-art patterns and be able to design a beautiful egg of your own.
The class takes place in the River Arts District and the cost is $59 for all the supplies and the workshop. Sign up on the event page here.
New Beer Fest at the Newly Renamed Harrah’s Cherokee Downtown
If you were mourning the end of the Winter Warmer Beer Fest, which used to be a staple event in the cooler months, then you can rejoice in the newest beer fest addition to the calendar. This Leap Day, join other beer fans at the former U.S. Cellular Center (now Harrah’s Cherokee) for Brew Horizons Beer Fest 2020. This event is sponsored by Green Built Alliance as a fundraiser for the Blue Horizon’s project.
Check out the Facebook event for more information and to buy your tickets.
Projects Around the House
Of course, you may not feel like going out and that’s fine. There are plenty of things you can do around the house. Maybe you’re getting your home ready to sell or you want to organize your current space with the intention of buying a new home in 2020. This Leap Day is a perfect day to get started. Consider these ideas:
- Organize that spare bedroom or garage full of things you didn’t know what to do with before.
- Do some gardening if it’s a nice day.
- Paint a room to add some fresh color for spring.
