Celebrating Mother’s Day in 2021
Mothers hold a special place in our hearts and our culture. Especially after the year we’ve had, when so many mothers worked from home and were responsible for their children’s homeschooling, our community owes them a lot of gratitude. But, as has been the case for so long, mothers hold the system together. So how can you make Mother’s Day special this year? Here are a few ideas.
Call Your Mother
We’ve learned over the years that, overwhelmingly, moms want to hear from their kids. If you’re not in the same city as your mom, make sure you give her a call or connect over Zoom. This connection is vital right now. The regular use of video call technology that became so common during the pandemic is an excellent way for you and your mom to see each other’s faces and connect – and not just on Mother’s Day.
Offer to Help in the Yard or Garden
If you do live close by and can spend time with your mom, consider offering to spend a day in the yard or garden. Whether you help her with yard maintenance or garden side by side, the important part is spending the day doing something you love. Gardening has the added benefit of being a safe, outdoor activity that also benefits the environment.
Decorate the Front Porch
If you want to surprise mom in her own home, decorate the front porch. This is a fantastic activity to get the kids involved no matter what age. First, put up homemade signs that show how much you appreciate mom. Then, add balloons, streamers, or whatever other decorations will make you and mom happy. It can be a surprise or just a way to share your love for mom.
Make a Meal
Another great Mother’s Day treat to do with kids is to make a meal. If mom wants to be involved, she can help cook too. Or she can observe and be entertained with the cooking show and enjoy the resulting meal. Pick your mom’s favorite food and learn the recipe, which is a skill that can last a lifetime.
Celebrating your mother is something you should do every day, but make the second Sunday in May memorable for mom this year. We want to hear from you. Let us know in the comments how you will honor Mother’s Day this year.
