April 22nd is Earth Day. We know that celebrations in 2021 are going to be different. We focused a lot over the last year on the effects of climate change, the impact of the pandemic on the environment, and what we need to do moving forward. We know that celebrating Earth Day this year may not be met with large-scale celebrations, but there are still some things you can do at home with your family or pod. Here are a few safe Earth Day activities you can do this year.
Plant a Tree
One thing you can do at home with your family or in your neighborhood is to plant a tree. Native trees are a great way to help the local environment. Trees benefit the environment by producing oxygen, filtering the air, and preserving the water level in the soil. Fruit and shade trees can be the best choice, with the bonus for fruit trees being the eventual harvest. In addition, shade trees can help keep your home cool and reduce your energy costs.
Since we can’t gather in large groups this year, let’s gather online. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are great places to share information about Earth Day this year. Share a graphic about your community, ways to fight climate change locally, or how to celebrate the earth in Western North Carolina. Some hashtags people will be using this year include:
- #earthday
- #saveourplanet
- #earthday2021
- #AVLearthday
Attend a Virtual Event
With the knowledge that gatherings aren’t as feasible this year, many organizations are hosting virtual Earth Day events. You can read about and choose from several national events at Earth Day Initiative. Or check out options closer to home.
Make a Green Energy Plan
Now is a great time to consider how you can make a green energy plan for your home. If you’ve always wanted to install solar panels on your home or utilize other green energy options, take this Earth Day to begin your research. See what’s feasible in your home and with your budget to start using renewable energy.
Reduce Household Waste
This year, challenge your family or household to reduce or even eliminate household waste. Start with these ideas:
- Reduce food waste and start a compost pile.
- Utilize reusable shopping bags on your grocery trips.
- Invest in reusable bottles for water.
- Reduce dependence on paper towels by using washable rags or cloths.
- Get a reusable travel coffee cup.
- Follow your community guidelines for recycling.
