On Thursday, September 22nd, at 9:00pm, the northern hemisphere will experience the autumnal equinox. This is when day and night are the same length and begins to lead us toward the winter solstice, or the longest night of the year. The autumn equinox represents a turning point and a time to pause and reflect on the year so far. Let’s take a deeper look into what the equinox means.
Entering the Quiet Half of the Year
Despite happening every year, this is an incredible time. The seasonal cycle is explained by science, but it also carries an emotional and spiritual side along with it. When we hit the autumn equinox, we know we’re heading into the quieter, more pensive time of the year. As days get shorter and the nights grow longer, it is normal to tend to retreat into our homes and heads a little more. It’s a good time for self-reflection, setting goals, and picking up a new indoor hobby like meditation or yoga.
Harvesting for the Winter
Traditionally, Autumn is the time of the harvest. Our ancestors would use this begin to gather and preserve food, and celebrate with huge feasts, a tradition we still honor with the Thanksgiving holiday in November. Symbolically, the autumn equinox is also a time to consider what we’ve done so far in the year and look forward to what happens next.
Reevaluating Your Goals
Remember those resolutions you made at the beginning of January? Perhaps you didn’t make any resolutions, rather you chose to challenge yourself with a goal or idea to keep close to your heart all year. Now is a great time to check in where you are at with those goals or resolutions. Contemplate what you have accomplished so far and anticipate what can you still achieve before the end of the year. The autumn equinox is a great chance to reassess and make any necessary last-minute tweaks to reach your goals.
