Tips for a Safe and Healthy Holiday in 2021
As the seasons are turning, we find ourselves in a familiar place. Confidence is up regarding safety and health, but that doesn’t mean it’s 100% risk-free to let things go back to the way they were before. And especially for vulnerable people such as older adults, this year’s holidays could present similar challenges to those we faced in 2020. So what can you do to ensure a safe and healthy holiday for the whole family this year?
Safety Tips for Traveling
There is some interesting data coming out about the recent Delta Variant surge of COVID-19. While it spiked pretty high over the late summer, cases are beginning to dip again. We know for sure that this pandemic is far from predictable, so we need to be prepared for any circumstance.
Traveling during the holidays was mainly off the table last year, but more people will visit friends and family this year, and that’s okay as long as everyone understands the risks and stays safe.
Some people in high-risk groups may want to get the vaccine booster. Wearing masks on airplanes is currently required and highly recommended. And some people will decide a road trip feels safer than flying, so now’s a great time to drive to visit your loved ones.
Hosting a Virtual Holiday Celebration
A virtual gathering is still on the table if you have vulnerable family members, such as elderly parents, grandparents, or relatives with autoimmune disorders. Zoom has become a massive part of our collective consciousness, and people of all ages are using it to communicate today.
Instead of sharing a meal, set up a time for a virtual call where everyone can chat and catch up. You can even play games together over the internet. If you’re not sure what to talk about when you’re all together on a zoom, ask everyone to say what they’re thankful for the most in 2021.
Healthy Food for the Holiday Table
Health and wellness aren’t just about the pandemic, and many of us are thinking about ways to make the feast a better-balanced meal. The Mayo Clinic published a list of two dozen recipes you can make that focus on better nutrition for the meal without sacrificing flavor and satisfaction.
You can make the entire meal based on these recipes and have something for everyone. Choose delicious soups or salads for an appetizer, great alternatives, tasty and creative side dishes, and even delightful bread and desserts.
Fun and Safe Holiday Activities for the Whole Family
Here are a few options if you want to get together with the whole family but are worried about safety, social distancing, and even staying outdoors more.
- Toss a football in the yard
- Go for an after-dinner walk around the neighborhood
- Host a backyard bonfire
We would love to hear from you. What are you doing for this holiday season?
