Staying Fit In a COVID-19 World
With COVID-19 cases continuing to rise in North Carolina, some businesses, including gyms, are remaining closed. How are you staying fit and active while also staying safe and protecting the people around you? There are a few options for outdoor fitness on your own or safely with others. Let’s take a closer look at the ways to exercise safely during this pandemic.
Running
One socially-distanced option for exercise can be done in your neighborhood without a lot of equipment. All you need is a good pair of running shoes. Download a playlist of songs with the right tempo and you’re off to the races. You can even alternate jogging and walking if you don’t have a lot of previous experience with running.
Yoga
For a lower impact activity that can be done at home, indoors, or out, yoga is always a favorite. There are tons of online videos you can use to get you moving. One particular favorite is Yoga with Adriene. You can easily adjust the movements to fit your abilities. If you have a yoga mat, that’s great, but you don’t necessarily need one.
Outdoor Activities in Asheville
Many of us need the added motivation of going to the gym or a class. Since there has been a delay in their reopening, we are struggling to find the right balance for fitness in our lives.
AVL Today put together a guide for outdoor activities held around Asheville. Some include:
- 9Round North Asheville – offering high-intensity interval training FREE for everyone
- Beer City Crossfit
- Ladies Workout Asheville – outdoor classes
- YMCA of WNC – offering over 30 outdoor classes
There are also several local fitness teachers offering virtual classes you can join online, including several opportunities through the YMCA of WNC.
Stay Safe During COVID-19
Ultimately, if your goal is to stay fit and healthy during this time you will also need to remain safe from the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. There is still a lot of conflicting information, but we do know that the virus is easily transmitted between people. The state has mandated masks in public spaces and you’re encouraged to still maintain 6 feet of physical distancing.
Sunlight, fresh air, and the relaxing nature of the outdoors can be your respite. While we’re missing out on gym-based fitness, take time to utilize the resources available to you in our community.
