It’s hard to believe that June is almost over! We’re about to turn the calendar to July, which means even more celebrations. The 4th of July lights up the sky with colorful fireworks at night after a day of picnics and fun in the summer sun. It’s essential to stay safe as we celebrate July 4th. Here are some safety tips for this summer holiday and some activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Sun and Heat Safety
The summer sun can be brutal – even here in the mountains. It’s crucial for us, our kids, and our pets to stay safe in the summer heat.
Start with sun protection. While the sun provides vitamin D, there is always the possibility of too much of a good thing. Be sure to wear sunscreen or other skin protection, including some stylish sunglasses and hats. Also, stay hydrated when you’re out in the summer heat. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and be aware of the signs of dehydration.
Safety While Enjoying Water Activities
Summertime also means water fun. When playing in or around the water safety is essential– whether you’re traveling to the beach, enjoying a picnic at a nearby lake or river, or swimming in a neighborhood pool, stay alert for any safety concerns at all times. The best source of water safety for children is swimming lessons starting at a very young age.
Two good rules to live by are: never swim alone no matter your age, and make sure children always have an adult present when in or around the water. Always use a life jacket when in a boat or personal watercraft, and always stay away from pool drains. It can also be helpful to learn first aid in case of an emergency.
Fireworks Precautions
The 4th of July means fireworks in Western North Carolina. You can see multiple professional fireworks displays from high elevations around the area. While fireworks are gorgeous, they can be dangerous too.
When using fireworks at home (as a reminder, North Carolina allows some fireworks, such as non-aerial and non-explosive sparklers, fountains, and snake and glow worms. However, consumer fireworks such as explosives or aerial fireworks, roman candles and rockets are prohibited), always keep a safe distance, and don’t let small children interact with fireworks themselves.
Prepare Your Pets
It’s also essential to determine how your pets will react to professional and amateur fireworks. Be sure to keep a collar with an identification tag on your dog in case they get out of the house. If your dog is scared, prepare ahead of time to give them a safe space to hide, and give them plenty of exercise before the festivities begin.
