New Year, New Goals
Did you know that you’re 42% more likely to achieve a goal if you write it down? Yes, this one simple action will make you much more successful as you plan your New Year’s resolutions. So what do you have planned for 2021? Using SMART goal setting and writing down your plan for the next year, you can achieve your goals. Write down your goals for the new year and make a plan to achieve them.
Here’s an example of how SMART goal setting works when you’re preparing to buy a house in the new year. Using the concepts of setting specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely goals, you can buy a home in 2021.
The first thing is determining your specific goal. Is it saving for a house? If so, you should talk with an independent mortgage lender to find out your budget or other actions you need to take before being qualified. Once you know your specific goal– and write it down– it will be easier to accomplish the entire task.
Next, you need to determine how to measure your progress. Measuring your progress can be done by setting benchmarks. How much do you need to save for a down payment? Or, what steps do you need to take to repair your credit to qualify for a home loan? Break the goal down into individual tasks to help you stay on track and celebrate each milestone in the new year.
Your goals need to challenge you, and you do have to work hard to succeed, but your goals also need to be achievable. You can’t go from repairing your credit score to buying a 1.5 million dollar home in six months. That’s why talking with an independent mortgage lender first can help you determine achievable goals within realistic timeframes.
Along with realistic and achievable, goals need to be relevant. If you need to save for your down payment, you probably don’t want to make a goal of buying your dream car at the same time. But some goals naturally go together. Maybe you and your new spouse are considering starting a family. Buying a new home can go hand in hand with that goal.
Give yourself a deadline. Humans have a way of putting off important tasks when they don’t have a definite end date. Deadlines in the new year will give you something to work toward. For instance, if you need to get some other ducks in a row before you qualify for a loan, determine how long it will take you to achieve those other goals. If you want to buy a home in three years, plan to repair your credit score, pay off debts, and save for the down payment or a home repair fund.
