Gratitude and Looking Forward to 2022
Starting with Thanksgiving and lasting through the holidays, gratitude is talked about a lot as we get closer to turning the calendar page. Of course, at GoPrime Mortgage in West Asheville, we don’t think that gratitude should only be reserved for the holiday season. That’s why we encourage you to make a plan for gratitude and happiness throughout the year.
The Happiness Jar
The concept is simple.
- Get a jar – any kind will do, but a mason jar is most accessible.
- Every day, write down one good thing that’s happened.
- Place your note in the jar.
Every time something happens in your life that makes you especially happy, proud, grateful, or joyful, write it down and put it in the jar.
Author Elizabeth Gilbert championed the practice as a part of the Happiness Project. It quickly spread through the magic of social media. It’s such a simple concept that anyone of any age could make and use one.
Staying Grateful
You’ll begin to notice the little things when you keep a happiness jar. It’s not that bad things will stop happening to you, but if you focus on the good things to remember to write them down each day, you can stop yourself from dwelling on the negative. Even when something unpleasant happens, think about the people who help you and write down why you’re grateful.
Taking Action
Here’s your homework. Find a jar. It can be a decorative jar from an antique store, an old (and washed) pickle jar, or a decorated shoebox. Place it where you will see it every day. While the 21 days to make a habit is a myth, it will become part of your routine if you do something every day. Fold up the paper and put it in the jar. Add this to your to-do list every day, or set a calendar reminder on your phone so you don’t forget. Soon you’ll notice all the happy things that occur in your life. You’ll get excited about the prospect of writing them down once you get home to your jar.
Counting Your Blessings
Pick the same day every year to empty your jar. We suggest New Year’s Eve so that you can start your new Happiness Jar on January 1st. Reflect on all the joy and gratitude you felt every day as you put your happiness in the jar. When you’ve read them, you can do anything with them you want, such as burn them in a ritual, bundle them in an envelope to save, or throw them away. Then start with an empty jar the next day.
