Best Parks in Asheville to Celebrate Spring
It’s spring again! While it might have felt like we didn’t have much of a winter, I know we’re all excited about actual spring temperatures and a chance to get outside. We celebrated the Spring Equinox on March 21st this year, which also marks a year since COVID-19 began spreading across the country. So this year, the urge to ditch those parkas and get outdoors is even more vital. Getting outdoors is precisely what the doctor ordered, as long as we stay safe along the way. What Asheville parks should you check out this spring? Here are just a few:
Carrier Park
If for no other reason, you probably know about Carrier Park because of the times it’s been in the news when the French Broad has flooded. But the park is a great place to visit when it’s not entirely underwater. Carrier Park is also on the French Broad River Greenway, a trail that connects it to the next park on our list.
French Broad River Park
Not far from Carrier Park is French Broad River Park, which, as the name implies, is also on the river. Have a picnic, take your dog out for a fun afternoon, or enjoy the bike and walking path. There are also great decks along the river to give you a perfect spot to soak up the spring sun.
Pritchard Park
A small park downtown, right off Patton Avenue, is Prichard Park. The reason this needs to be mentioned is that it’s home to the famous Asheville Drum Circle. Every year, this tree-lined city park hosts a free community drum circle on Friday nights. The drum circle starts when the weather gets warm, but check this year for safety when gathering. As of last summer, masks and social distancing were encouraged. And, if you’re not into drumming, chess tables are lining the park where celebrities like Woody Harrelson have been spotted.
Pack Square
Also, downtown, we need to mention Pack Square. This park, situated in front of the City and County buildings, has a vast green space used for free concerts and other events throughout the year. There’s also Splashville, the water feature for kids to enjoy when the weather starts to get hot. We’re not sure what events will be happening this summer, but we’d encourage you to check with the city to see what’s happening as the weather gets warmer.
Richmond Hill
This park, just north of the city in Woodfin, has a lot to offer. We’re most excited about the Disc Golf course and hiking trails. Like many of the parks in the area, it borders the French Broad River. The park is over 180 acres, including forest and unpaved trails.
