Craving Time at the Beach? Closest Beach Trips from Western North Carolina
Living in Western North Carolina is a dream. We love being surrounded by some of the oldest mountains in the world. That being said, sometimes we have a craving to stand at the ocean and look out on the endless horizon. We are so lucky in the Carolinas, where we can be close to incredible mountains and several beach communities. Where do you want to plan a trip? Here are a few of the nearest beaches from Asheville.
A recent list put Myrtle Beach at the top of the list of fastest-growing places in the US over the next year. Only a 5-hour drive to the coast of South Carolina, Myrtle Beach is one of the top destinations for those who want to spend a weekend or all summer near the water. While there, you can also visit the downtown shopping and restaurant area or get adventurous with various water sport rentals.
Even though it’s south of Myrtle Beach, Charleston, SC, is slightly closer to Asheville. It’s only a 4-hour drive from our city. The beaches around Charleston include Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, and Folly Beach. You can also spend time in the historic downtown Charleston district, home to a few world-class restaurants and plenty of entertainment.
The nearest North Carolina beach town to Asheville is Wilmington, located just five and a half hours east. Like Charleston, Wilmington has a lovely downtown area and several nearby beaches, including Kure Beach, Carolina Beach, and Wrightsville Beach. You can explore the area’s breweries or take a haunted history tour.
The Outer Banks
If you’re feeling more adventurous, hop in the car for a 7-hour drive to the Outer Banks, a unique area of the country located right here in North Carolina. The Outer Banks is made up of islands, featuring amazing beaches where you can camp, relax, or adventure. Famous beaches include Kitty Hawk and Nags Head. And don’t worry, there are plenty of attractions perfect for a family getaway.
