Your Thanksgiving 2020 To-Do List: Planning a Low-Stress Holiday
If there is one word to describe 2020, it’s unexpected. And for that reason, we find ourselves planning what might be very non-traditional holidays this year. With Thanksgiving 2020 coming up, we thought it might help put together a to-do list to help make managing this holiday a little easier. You can use this checklist as is or as inspiration to create your own.
Thanksgiving 2020 Safety Plan
The constant theme of 2020 has been about safety. With new information coming out all the time about how the novel coronavirus is spread, it’s essential to be cautious when you’re traveling or even staying at home. This is especially true if you will be in contact with loved ones who may be at higher risk.
- Plan small gatherings.
- Wear facemasks
- Keep indoor spaces ventilated
- Be honest about concerns
Smaller gatherings will be much safer than large groups. Everyone should wear facemasks when not eating or drinking and maintain distance as much as possible. If the weather permits it, keep windows in the home open and allow for fresh air.
Of course, more than anything, you need to be honest about any concerns. If you feel uncomfortable gathering for any reason, don’t be afraid to speak up and make alternate plans.
Meal Planning
If you are making a Thanksgiving dinner, plan ahead to ensure that you have all of your ingredients and supplies. To lessen the burden on any one individual, you can also ask the people attending to bring a dish to share.
We were going to create a complete meal planning checklist, but then it occurred to us that some great resources already exist. You can find one timeline here. PBS also has a great list here.
Remote Gatherings
One option to consider this year is to host a remote gathering so that you can still see and interact with members of your family (blood or chosen) who can’t be with you. Using a tool such as Zoom gives everyone a chance to spend time together even if they’re not in the same place. You can even use the platform to play games. There’s a whiteboard feature that’s perfect for a round of Pictionary.
Low-Stress Thanksgiving
While it may feel impossible with the kind of year we’ve had so far, planning is the best way to have a stress-free, or at least minimally stressful, Thanksgiving 2020. One thing you can do to help reduce stress is to remember the meaning behind the holiday and focus on gratitude rather than anxiety. If you’re feeling blue because this year won’t be the same, take some time to consider what you’re thankful for in your life.
