Staying Safe in the Summer Heat
It’s summer, and that means we’re spending more time outside. Longer days come with warmer temperatures and more sun exposure. The sun gives our bodies essential nutrients, such as vitamin D, but even with all the health benefits of spending time outdoors, it’s necessary you and your family stay safe in the summer heat. Here are a few things you should know and what you can do to protect your family throughout the summertime.
Safe Sunscreen Use
Sunscreen will help keep you and your children safe from dreaded sunburns. Sunburns can cause blisters and, over time, increase the risk for skin cancer. Using a high SPF sunscreen will help your skin stay healthy. Remember to reapply frequently, especially if you’re using bug spray or spending time in the water.
Check the UV Index
When planning outdoor activities, check your local weather for the UV index. The sun’s ultraviolet rays cause skin damage, so avoid prolonged exposure on days where the UV index is high. The website Willy Weather is reliable and provides daily and three-day UV index numbers so you can plan your days out.
Seek Out Shade
One way to reduce harmful sun exposure is to spend time in the shade. Shade is easy to accomplish in Asheville woods, but if you take a trip out to the beach or spend time in an open park, keep the shade in mind. An umbrella or canopy can help. You can also watch the position of your shadow. If it’s short, seek out some shade for a while.
Wear Sunglasses
Your eyes can also be affected by the sun, and extended exposure can lead to long-term damage. Everyone in your family, including children, should use sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun. Look for labels indicating the glasses block 99% of the sun’s rays. You may even consider polarized lenses. If you or your kids wear prescription glasses, buy some inexpensive clip-on sunglasses.
Not Just Summer
Since it’s July, we’re talking about summertime sun exposure, but you shouldn’t forget about it at other times of the year. You should consider sun safety even in the winter. We know water reflects the sun’s rays, and so does snow. Using sunscreen can help you enjoy the outdoors all year long in our beautiful part of the country.
