National Hobby Month: Meet-Ups and Enthusiast Groups for Hobbies in WNC
Welcome to the New Year! It’s common when we turn the calendar to think of all the resolutions we will make, including improving our finances, finding a new job, or getting healthier. Well, one excellent New Years’ resolution to consider this year is finding a new hobby or interest to get you excited. January is National Hobby Month. How can you find like-minded people who love what you love in the WNC area? Here are some tips.
Hiking Groups
In a town known for amazing outdoor adventures, it’s not a surprise that there are plenty of hiking groups. There are countless hiking groups in the area, many specialized, such as groups for singles or people who love to hike with their dogs. There are groups for adventurous hikers or those just getting started. They’re a great way to meet new people and enjoy the gorgeous southern Appalachian landscape.
Car Aficionados
Western North Carolina, home to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Tail of the Dragon, is also a popular spot for car enthusiasts. Whether you love to drive classic cars, sports cars, British cars, or small convertibles, there is a group here for you. Meet-ups can include car shows as well as road rallies and Sunday drives.
The Mystical and Magical
There has long been a tradition of the mystical in Asheville. It has been said that, much like Sedona in Arizona, the Asheville area has a unique energy that attracts people who appreciate the metaphysical. If that’s what you love, there is no shortage of magical meet-ups in the Asheville area. Whether you love crystals or tarot, practice reiki or meditation, or all of the above, there are places for you to meet like-minded people.
Geeky Get-Togethers
Nerd culture has rocketed in popularity over the last decade. People who love Doctor Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, and anime can be found in all walks of life, and there are a variety of meet-ups in our area for the geeks among us. Boardgame, role-playing, and sci-fi-fantasy and paranormal fans can get together at places like Well Played or Wyvern’s Tale or through meet-ups at other gathering places.
Foodies
Asheville is known for its fantastic food. We have multiple James Beard Award-winning chefs and restaurants in our tiny town. With food comes foodies, and if what you love is to enjoy excellent meals with friends, Asheville has meet-ups for you. There are coffee groups, vegan groups, healthy eating groups, and beer groups, just to name a few.
How to Start Your Own Meet-Up
What if you don’t find the group you want in town? Why not create your own? Developing a safe space for like-minded people is the perfect way to make new friends. You can start by creating an account on MeetUp.Com or post your idea as a public Facebook event. Then show up and greet others who come out to celebrate the things you love.
