Make the Most of Your December in 2020
Whatever winter holiday you’re celebrating, we know that 2020 may look a little different than years past. You may not be able to travel to see family or friends in other states, and there won’t be the traditional holiday parades and other community gatherings. However, you can do plenty of things to celebrate the season while still staying safe and socially distant. Here are a few things to consider.
Winter Lights at the Arboretum
The winter light display at the Arboretum has been a favorite for locals and tourists alike for many years. Every area of the garden is decorated in a sparkling light display to spread holiday cheer. This year the show will go on, but be sure to check out the Arboretum’s policies on masks, physical distancing, and other COVID-19 safety measures they have in place.
Christmas at the Biltmore Estate
Another display known the world over as a highlight of the holiday season is the tree and décor displays at the Biltmore Estate. Get your tickets for a daytime self-guided tour or the evening candlelight events. You can visit Antler Village for food and drinks. While the information we wrote indicated, the event was happening this year, always check with the Biltmore to verify their COVID-19 safety plans.
A Mountain Christmas Trail of Lights
If you want to see an impressive light display from the safety of your vehicle, check out the Mountain Christmas Trail of Lights from the Blue Ridge Parkway to Bakersville. It’s 15 miles of holiday displays, mostly put together by community members. It also features its radio station so you can listen to holiday music during your drive.
Virtual and Socially Distanced Gingerbread House Competition
The annual gingerbread house competition, usually displayed at the historic Grove Park Inn, will not be open to the public, but the hotel plans some alternatives. There will be socially distanced experiences for hotel guests and a virtual tour for fans at home.
Spending the Holiday at Home
Of course, even with various precautions, many of us are feeling safer at home. But your holiday can still be magical even if you aren’t able to visit popular attractions this year. Make 2020 a year of new traditions:
- Watch a classic or new holiday movie once a week.
- Decorate the inside of the house together as a family.
- Make cookies or other holiday treats.
- Send holiday cards to friends and family.
- Host a Zoom cocktail party for adults.
- If it snows, build a snowman, or have a snowball fight.
Of course, if you’re planning any events this season, check out the venue ahead of time to prevent disappointment in the face of cancellation. Like all things in 2020, things can change at the last minute without warning.
