Back in 2020, we declared that one of our motivators was to “make mortgages sexy.” We wrote this article and stand by what we said. Buying a house, with all the excitement of touring, imagining your life there, and negotiating the purchase price, can all be sexy. It’s part of building your future. There is also a disappointing flipside when people lose out on a home or can’t afford what they want, which is one reason why the mortgage process is just as big of a piece of the puzzle as everything else. If we can make the experience of getting a mortgage just a little more exciting, we can give more potential homebuyers a shot at achieving their dream of homeownership. Here’s a recap that outlines how we continue to work toward making buying a home exciting!
Change How We Talk About Money
Our culture has made it taboo to talk about money. We don’t discuss it and sometimes feel shameful about our relationship with it.
Whether we like it or not, money drives our world and we should talk about it openly and in a healthy way. We need to change the entire conversation about money; our earnings, our savings, and what we owe. Making that shift won’t be easy, but we think it’s vital.
Have Fun While Handling Finances
Here’s the thing: money can be fun. Access to more apps and tools we can use are doing that work for us. We need to take money seriously, but it doesn’t have to be a chore.
One recommendation is to use zero-balance budgeting. The app “You Need a Budget,” or YNAB, is an easy tool to rethink spending and budgeting. Zero-balance budgeting assigns every dollar to a job.
For example, if you’re saving for a down payment on a home, create a category in your budget and put money there from every paycheck, no matter how much. Then when you get paid, divide your money into all the budget categories you’ve created. You can even create a category for entertainment so you don’t feel trapped each month. Enjoy knowing where every dime goes to and watch as you work towards your goals.
Reduce the Technical Jargon
We believe we have ownership over how we talk about the housing industry. GoPrime Mortgage in West Asheville adjusts how we talk about finances and buying a home. We will ensure that you understand each step along the journey. All the technical jargon can be confusing, so we see the importance of communicating using the same clear language.
Independent mortgage lenders should be community educators. We will always communicate available sources to match your needs, as well as opportunities for potential assistance to secure a mortgage that’s right for you.
