What’s the History of West Asheville?
The earliest known inhabitants of the West Asheville area were Native Americans. In the late 18th century, outsiders began arriving in the area. Some notable moments in the history of West Asheville include:
- In 1777, a fort was built near Hominy Creek by William Moore and his slaves.
- In 1827, sulfur springs were discovered, followed a few years later by the construction of Deaver’s Springs Hotel, which was the beginning of West Asheville as a tourist destination.
- In 1885, Haywood Road started development.
- By the 1930s, trolleys operated along Haywood Road.
West Asheville used to be separate from Asheville, but in 1917, residents voted to consolidate with the City of Asheville. From the 1950s through the 1980s, Patton Avenue was the main traffic corridor, but in the 1990s, new businesses started to spring up along Haywood Road. In 2000, West Asheville Development LLC purchased the street’s historic buildings for renovation.
