Happy 4th of July! Summer is in full swing, so you may be thinking about where to go before the season is over. If you’re looking for a fun vacation spot within a five-hour drive of Asheville, we have a few suggestions for you to consider. Here are some of our favorite vacation spots within a half-day drive.
Savannah, Georgia
A historical gem on the Georgia coast, Savannah is a must-see spot. There is so much to do for people of all ages. Try staying in the downtown area and walk among the historically designated squares. You can visit the City Market, check out Bonaventure Cemetery, or take a stroll down River Street. For travelers over 21, Savannah is known for their open container permissions, so you can take your drinks to go while you stroll! Don’t forget to drive over the causeway to visit Tybee Island on the ocean. After your adventures, grab dinner at the world-famous Crab Shack and take a walk on the beaches. The trip from Asheville is just under five hours.
Charleston, South Carolina
This spot is slightly closer to home, just up the coast in South Carolina – Charleston! Like Savannah, it has a rich history as a coastal town. There are haunted tours, historic walks, and home of some of the country’s most incredible food. There are several beach areas to visit, too. Head out to Sullivan’s Island, home to Poe’s Tavern near where Edgar Allan Poe was stationed when he was in the army. Check out Isle of Palms or Folly Beach. Charleston is just over four hours from Asheville.
Lexington, Kentucky
Traveling the opposite direction for about four and a half hours, you’ll make it to bourbon and horse country in Lexington, Kentucky. You can visit horse farms and tracks, or check out tours at distilleries on Kentucky’s famous bourbon trail. There’s a distillery district near downtown and plenty of local breweries.
Atlanta, Georgia
Do you prefer to spend your time in the bustling big city? Don’t forget about Atlanta! While the metro area is sprawling, there are plenty of things to do near downtown. Visit the area breweries, check out the Center for Puppetry Arts, or stroll through downtown Decatur. Plus, you’ll find world-class food and drink everywhere you turn. Atlanta is three and a half hours from Asheville.
Charlotte, North Carolina
Charlotte, North Carolina, is even closer to home. You can visit museums, theaters, and plenty of restaurants only two hours away. Nearby is the Carowinds amusement park with plenty of roller coasters to get the adrenaline pumping. Also, some of Broadway’s best performances appear at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. And, if you wait until Fall to visit, you can check out a Carolina Panthers football game.
