Every year we revisit the “spring equinox” as a time of finding balance. The equinox happens twice each year, in the Spring and Fall. During these times we’re at transitional points between seasons as the length of day and night are equal. The spring equinox marks when the days will start getting longer through the summer; many people look at it as a time of regrowth and re-engagement. Here are some ideas to help you find balance during the spring equinox this year.
The Science of the Spring Equinox
The first day of Spring on our calendar is referred to as the spring equinox and occurs around March 20th or 21st each year. The tilt of the earth’s axis is not inclined away or towards the sun; daylight and darkness are equal all over the planet. During the March equinox, the sun is directly over the equator, marking the start of Spring in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere.
Springtime Meditations and Activities
Because it’s Spring here in Asheville, we are feeling the pull of the season and the delight of the increasing daylight. While our winters are relatively mild, now is when we’ll start spending more time outdoors and thinking about a great time to think of new ways to improve our lives.
Try celebrating the Spring with meditations on the season. Sitting outside and listening to the birds and the wind in the new leaves can help you clear your thoughts and be more intentional. You can also be more active by riding your bike, hiking, or gardening in your yard. Spring is also a great time to start looking for a new house if you’re in the market!
Spring Cleaning for a Fresh Start
Since we can finally open our windows and enjoy the fresh air, Spring has become synonymous with cleaning. A spring cleaning isn’t just sweeping and dusting, it’s also about clearing out the energy from the darker time of year to move into the Spring and Summer. Here are some tips:
- Start by decluttering – donate any gently used items to your local shelters.
- Clean from top to bottom – starting with moldings or cabinets and ending with the floors.
- Pay attention to the hard-to-reach areas that aren’t cleaned as often.
- Tackle one room at a time, and don’t pressure yourself to get everything done in one day.
