During the summer solstice, the Earth’s axis tilts towards the sun, resulting in the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The opposite occurs in the southern hemisphere, where it is the winter solstice. As a result of the Earth’s axial tilt, the sun appears at its highest point in the sky this day, and its rays strike the Earth at a more direct angle. This leads to more intense sunlight and warmer temperatures in the northern hemisphere. After the solstice, the days begin to get shorter again.

Western North Carolina has diverse ecosystems, including forests, mountains, and rivers. In the mountains, many deciduous trees, such as oaks, maples, and birches, are in full leaf during the summer solstice. Many fruits, such as apples and peaches, come into season and provide food for the area’s animals and us. In the forests, many bird species, such as warblers and thrushes, breed and raise their young during the summer solstice.

Insects, including butterflies, moths, and beetles, are active during this time and provide an essential food source for birds and other predators.
