Helping Out Our Veterans
Returning from serving in the US Military can be a complex scenario. There are limited resources for many of our veterans in terms of healthcare and mental health awareness. But one program that many veterans are able to take advantage of once they return home is the VA loan program. VA loans can be issued by a qualified lender, which can open the process up to more people. In some cases, this benefit is available for surviving spouses as well as for all returning veterans. At Prime Mortgage Lending, we can help our returning vets find the right homes in our community. Here are just a few things to keep in mind.
Building Relationships in Asheville
Asheville is home to an extensive VA hospital system. It’s a place many people come from the southeast to receive care. Buncombe county also has a Veterans Services department and there are a number of private organizations dedicated to making the lives of our returning vets easier.
It is critical to us here at Prime Mortgage Lending, that we are part of a community who cares about every one of our residents. We are hopeful that we can help vets of all ages find the right home and home loan to live in our community.
How to Qualify for a VA Loan
You can see our detailed post here regarding qualifying for a VA loan. But in short, here are some of the fine details.
Requirements include:
- At least 90 consecutive days of active service during wartime.
- 181 days or more of active service during peace time.
- 6 or more years of service with the National Guard or Reserves.
- The spouse of a service member who has died in the line or duty or due to a service-related disability. This is limited to spouses who have not remarried.
Along with the general requirements of service, there are additional qualifications that could impact your ability to receive a loan that is VA guaranteed.
For example, you need to have a credit score that is satisfactory, a sufficient income from employment, pension, social security/disability income or other verifiable sources. A certificate of Eligibility or COE can be obtained online, by mail, or through your local lender.
At Prime Mortgage Lending we suggest you start by talking with one of our experts to learn about your options and to begin the process. While you can apply online or through the mail, there is comfort in knowing that you’ll have a direct point of contact for questions or concerns long the way. And face to face appointments are more than welcome at our office space in Asheville, NC.
Most mortgage lenders have access to a system called WebLGY which gives them the ability to apply for the Certificate of Eligibility and start the process of qualifying you for a VA loan.

We highly recommend the resource Advice for Vets. This site provides real stories from people who have been where you are. It can help you find the resources you need or just let you know there are others who feel like you do.
Within the Asheville area, we also encourage our vets to take advantage of mental health services when necessary.
