Small Towns Around Asheville
While Asheville gets all the press in the Western North Carolina mountains, we know that some other unique communities are all around the city. From the borders of Eastern Tennessee, Southern Virginia, and northern Georgia, the mountain region of North Carolina has its own culture that’s unique from the low country, the coast, and everywhere in between. We could go on forever showcasing small towns, but here are just a few.
Located on the edge of Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Bryson City is the quintessential, small North Carolina town. Even with its proximity to one of the most visited national parks, Bryson City remains practically untouched by tourism, giving it a very authentic feel as you wander through the downtown area.
The town of Spruce Pine is located in Mitchell County near the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 331. Despite its small size, Spruce Pine has two main streets, nicknamed Upper and Lower, where they usually host several festivals. Spruce Pine includes the annual Fire on the Mountain Festival and the out-of-this-world Spruce Pine Alien Festival.
Cherokee is more than just a city in North Carolina; it’s the Eastern Band of Cherokee’s sovereign nation. It’s a fantastic gateway to the natural beauty of WNC, including hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities. There’s access to the art and culture of the indigenous people living in our state. Cherokee is also home to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino, which features slots, card games, restaurants, spas, entertainment, and hotels.
Drive east from Asheville, and in about an hour, you’ll find yourself in the town of Morganton. Morganton is the original home of Catawba Brewing, which has expanded all across the state. Fonta Flora brewery has also put Morganton on the map. If you’re a fan of the outdoors, consider visiting Brown Mountain to experience the Brown Mountain Lights phenomenon.
On the way to Morganton, you’ll drive through the nearby town of Black Mountain. It’s home to the famous LEAF festival that’s held twice a year at Lake Eden. Downtown is a perfect place to wander, see local art, check out restaurants, and enjoy local beer at the two breweries. Black Mountain is the ideal spot sitting just outside of the Asheville city center without being too far away.
We could go on for days listing towns all around WNC, and maybe we’ll talk more in the future about all of the fantastic places to visit and live in our area. We’d love to hear from you. What are your favorite small towns outside of Asheville?
